Willy has been looking forward to playing Santa at the after-school centre set up for children of working parents, and Alvirah has been busy with rehearsals for the Christmas pageant. But suddenly a shadow falls upon the Christmas cheer. The centre is threatened with closure, a deathbed legacy gives the promised replacement home to others, a valuable chalice - long missing - is spotted at the centre before disappearing again, and a desperate woman turns up, begging for help in tracing the baby she abandoned seven years before. And in a final blow, the young girl who is to play Mary in the Christmas pageant vanishes without trace.
